Kimberley dental service founder wins volunteer award for helping fight 'dirty' dentistry

Updated

A dentist has become an award winning volunteer for the Salvation Army in her battle against cavities.

In the first of its kind nationwide, Kimberly Myers has won a $45,000 award in the charity's Volunteer of the Year competition.

Ms Myers was the first woman ever to win, and was a young woman in a hurry.

She had started volunteering at the dental office a year earlier, but her boss told her it was not financially viable without additional income, and so she had to start saving.

"We worked it off," Ms Myers said.

The dentist's family has also invested $200,000 for the dental clinic and an in-house dentist to operate.

The prize goes to the charity's highest paid volunteer.

The group's president Scott Kallman said Ms Myers, who lives in Florida and has two children, was thrilled to win the award.

"It's one thing when your own hard work is recognized — it's another thing when you become a volunteer. To me, it's fantastic," Mr Kallman said.

"It's one of the coolest things to have, just to be able to support the Salvation Army and get one of your own nominated for the award, it's a phenomenal thing to be able to do."

Ms Myers, who lives in the western Sydney suburb of Milton, won $40,000, but will not be able to take home the $45,000 prize.

World cup costa rica greece penalties of 1.5 billion euros per year to reduce corruption, according to an opinion poll published this month. This was the highest value per worker of the world's 27 countries.

Some countries are even more aggressive about reducing corruption in the long term than countries in the developing world. In 2012, Brazil's Corruption Perceptions Index was 3.7, the highest in Latin America's region and one of the highest in the world. China's ranking was 6th.
